It's our second trip to the lake .The first one was really short ...that's when we were on our way back from Vermont last year when we had been to enjoy the splendor of Fall. But that short stop at the Lake made us resolve that we would be back this year to enjoy the lake in all it's glory. We ended up going a couple of weeks ago. Both me and my wife were anxious about the trip and I had
done my research and booked us for a couple of nights at a bed and breakfast place in Lake George Village.Being at the village definitely was a good idea as we were close to the boardwalk and a few minutes walk from most restaurants.
Day 1-
After going through all the brochures that my wife and me picked up from the hotel lobby,we decided to go speed boating on a U-drive boat. We rented the boat for an hour and after a short
operations tour by our speed boat guide ,we were on our way and
had the 30 horse power engine giving us the ride of our life on the lake .It was really thrilling and we enjoyed the adrenalin rush actually speeding on the lake!!A dream come true!Riding the speed boat is very much like driving a car except that the boat is a little slow to respond to the
stimulus and by the time you realize it you might have turned the steering a wee bit too much...but I'll give myself a B+ on that since it was my first time.Next on our agenda was High Falls Gorge which is just under 90 miles from Lake George Village. It's a must go for avid waterfall lovers. We were enthralled
once we were there. It's about a 30-45 minute walk and you get to view the falls from a lot of different locations along the walk.A couple of spots are really nice where you feel you could stand and enjoy the sound of water gushing and looking at the falls forever. There's also a couple of other trails
that you can hike along after viewing the falls, but make sure you go early as we just had enough time for one trail. The place closes around 4.30 pm. After we were lucky to find a gas station about 9 miles away,we drove another mile or so and arrived at Lake Placid, the site of the 1932 and 1980 winter
Olympic games. After parking at the municipal parking lot,we started walking .Downtown Lake Placid was quite nice. There was one place which was a glass blowing shop.A sweet elderly lady was actually blowing various shapes out of hot molten glass and it was exciting to watch her.The shop was full of delicate
glass artifacts and there was a placard which stated they pack everything ready to withstand the rigors of travel. And of course,it's a challenge these days:).We walked quite a bit and finally found a couple of nice Adirondack chairs on the edge of Mirror lake where we decided to perch for a bit.I think Lake
Placid is definitely worth a visit after coming all the way to Lake George. We then decided it was time to call it a day and before heading back we decided to grab a banana split at Stewart's.And then we were on our way back.We were quite exhausted that evening and decided to grab some chinese at a decent Chinese restaurant in the village .They were also serving sushi. We stuck to the Kung Pao chicken and my wife opted for the tempura platter.Turned out quite nice, especially with the cold Sapporo which seemed to come out right out of Japan.
Day 2- After a nice night's sleep ,we were ready to roll out and decided to hit the Prospect Mountain foot trail.we had read about this trail and definitely wanted to check it out.You can drive to the top as well if the road to Prospect Moutain is open ,but we wanted to enjoy first hand the charms and thrills of
going it by foot and set out with a sense of adventure. The entrance to the trail is located at the intersection of Montcalm and Smith st.The trail is definitely not for the mild hearted ...it tests the resolve of a true hiker. You need a lot of grit and determination to make it to the top as the trail is
quite steep and laden with rocks and at times can get slippery due to the wet foliage if it's rained a couple of days before.Took us about two and a half hours to hit the summit ,but once we were there the view is just breathtaking. We also met a biker who had made it to the top in about 45 minutes. When we
asked him for a ride back,he declined and said it should take us just about 5 minutes to walk back down...;-).Hope our little adventure has sparked off that nature lover in you . If you decide to go,I'm sure you'll make some nice memories to remember...Happy Journey!!!
